Sideshow

Bill Russell and Henry Krieger

Side Show is loosely based on the true story of Siamese twins, Violet and Daisy Hilton who became stars during the Depression. Side Show is a moving portrait of two women joined at the hip, whose extraordinary bondage brings them fame but denies them love. Told almost entirely in song, the show follows their progression from England to America, around the vaudeville circuit and to Hollywood on the eve of their appearance in the 1932 movie Freaks.

The musical of the twins is a search for survival and love through both the high and low points in their career. As a piece of theatre its themes include the universal need for acceptance, the strength of the human spirit and it asks us as an audience to look at why we are both fascinated and often repelled by those who are physically abnormal.

Written in 1997 by Bill Russell (lyrics) and Henry Krieger (music), it opened on Broadway on October 16, 1997. Side Show received four Tony nominations and was the first time that two actresses were co-nominated for Best Actress in a Musical as a team.

The music is by the composer of the wonderful musical and movie sensation, "Dreamgirls".

Presented by students in their third and final year at NASDA.
