Mother Courage

In the interesting times in which we live cities and economic and political regimes seem to be falling about people’s ears.  Ways of making and distributing resources and what we determine as wealth are being questioned on a local and global scale.  Brecht is the poet who wants us to question everything we deem ‘natural’.  ‘Mother Courage’ challenges us to examine where our responsibilities lie: to family, to our own security or to doing what we can to change a world that is clearly unjust and unequal.  Brecht’s intentions were clear, his method  ‘epic theatre’.  In our media-saturated, instant gratification culture what does ‘epic theatre’ mean in Christchurch in 2011?  Mother Courage: powerful theatre that entertains and provokes.  Staged by Year 2 students in the NASDA Theatre, Madras Street Campus, E Block.

Written by Bertolt Brecht, Directed by Tony McCaffrey
